Smacklillision Weekend Round Up PLE And PPV Edition
Intro
With Saudi Arabia, and. Las Vegas becoming the backdrop for this weekend. I have to say that i'm excited to see both. PLE, and. PPV Events. It's unsual that we get to events, and tv tapings next to one another, on the same weekend, and if i'm honest. I'm here for all of it, because in the words of The Offspring, in a good sense. Let The Bad Times Roll.
Smackdown
Superstars showing up
Randy orton. Tama Tonga. Nia Jax, and. Bianca Belair, were all seen showing up to the arena.
Bianca Belair vs Nia Jax Queen Of The Ring SemiFinal
I liked all of this. The match had a good flow to it, from. Nia wearing a crown, that looked like it had just come out from a giant christmas, to. Biancas knee injury being the main story selling point of the match, both ladies showcased great back and forth in ring work. Bianca put forward her feats of strength, by powerbombing Jax, however her strength would also be her downfall, as. Nia capitalised on this, after she failed to put her away with a kod. Jax got the win with her eNialator finisher, she then called out Lyra Valkyria, who was sat at ringside, by letting her know, that she has taken out her idols. Bianca then ran into Candace Lerae and Indi Hartwell backstage, whilst she was nursing her knee, and they acted like schoolyard bullies, but thankfully, enter stage left. Jade Cargill. Bianca. Indi, both of you, cut the s***. I can dream right.
The Grayson Waller Effect
I liked all of this. I'm not the biggest fan of Austin Theory, but he was used well here, he acted as a back up host, which made sense. They were supposed to bring out LA Knight, but outcame Carmelo Hayes. All three men trashed veterans of the business, like. Bobby Lashley, and. LA Knight. Knight came out, and put all three men to the verbal sword, and the fans loved it. The Street Profits came out, this brought on an impromptu six man tag match. That saw Knight and the profits get the win.
Cody Rhodes Segment
I loved this segment. From the Saudi Arabian fans basking in the pressence of The American Nightmare. Logan Paul, not giving him time to speak, and the pair having an excellent promo dual. Logi stated that Yogi Bear is better than him at everything. Cody see's through Logans pasade, and calls him a liar, and a scared little boy, because he fears the fans will see him as a fraud. Cody asks him to show his spare brass knucks, so. Logan pulls in an official to check Cody over first, he's clean, but. Logan, well he wasn't clean, the found his spare set. Logan left whilst taunting the Undisputed Champion. Cody fired back, scolding Logan with fire, and passion. All of this was excellent.
Bayley vs Chelsea Green
Bayley, beat. Chelsea Green in a flat tv match. She got beaten down by Piper Niven in the aftermath.
AJ Styles segment
AJ Styles was seen in the office of the Smackdown GM, and he was asking for one more shot at Cody's belt. Nick said that he would keep this in mind, out of respect for AJ. And just like that, the whining cry baby has got what he wants.
The Bloodline Segment
A few weeks ago. I was going through Linkin Parks back catalogue, when news broke, that they could be reforming with a female singer, and when I got to their Living Things album. I started to think of The Bloodline, when I heard the track Lies Gread Misery, because it examplifies what the current state of the faction is all about. This segment was proof. It's clear that their heading to Survivor Series with this, and the ramifications will be wide spread.
Randy Orton vs Tama Tonga King Of The Ring SemiFinal
This. Was. A fast paced fun match. WWE's pressentation of Tama has been awesome, and tonight, seeing him walk down with the pyro going off, made me feel like I was watching a PLE main event. Randy may have got the win, with an RKO from out of nowhere, but the fact that he let Tama, take in a lot of offence, just goes to show what type of veteran he has become. Randy was beaten down in the aftermath, by. The Bloodline. That was until Kevin Owens came out to make the save, as the show went off the air.
WWE King And Queen Of The Ring
Stars show up
Logan Paul. Cody Rhodes. Randy Orton. Gunther. Nia Jax, and. Lyra Valkyria, were all seen showing up to the Stadium in Jeddah.
Becky Lynch vs Liv Morgan WWE Womens Championship
I liked all of this, from. Becky coming out looking like a French mime without the face paint, whilst. Liv came out cosplaying as Britney Spears, from the Oops I Did It again music video. Both ladies had a banger of an opening match, the physicality represented a fist fight in the early going, it then transitioned into barn burner, the nearfalls were perfectly timed. The Human Oven turned up, and wreaked havoc in the wrong way. He slid a chair Into the ring, for. Becky to use, but Liv got her hands on it, because Becky didn't see it. Liv hit her with her obLivion ddt, for the win, and just like that. Liv Morgan is our new WWE Womens Championship. Like I've said before. I liked all of this.
Chad Gable vs Bronson Reed vs Sami Zayn IC Championship
This. Felt. Special, from the start, the storythread kicked in when Chad kicked Maxine to the back, leaving just Otis by his side. Bronson Reed came out, looking like someone, who I wouldn't like to meet down a dark alley, on a wet night. Sami's entrance however was something else, the video that aired beforehand showcased differences in culture, and how Sami's background is no longer an issue for him coming over for these shows. WWE handled this well, as the panaramic shot captured Sami's entrance perfectly. The saudi Arabian fans were electric for this from the start, and their energy didn't let up once throughout this. This. Match ran through like a perfect triple threat match, the near falls, and the physicality, made for a saturday night treat, from the double ankle lock, to chad pulling one hell of a feat of strength, suplexing, both. Sami, and. Bronson with ease, to Otis clotheslining his coach, after Chad verbally berrated him. This allowed Sami to hit Bronson with a hellouva kick for the retention. This. Was. Excellent.
Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill segment
Bianca Belair, and. Jade Cargill were backstage, having retained their Tag Team Championships, against. Indi Hartwell, and. Candace Lerae. I watched the match before the main show, and let's just say. It wasn't much to write home about.
Nia Jax vs Lyra Valkyria Queen Of The Ring Womens Final
First things first. I'm a garafe, agh yes. Corey Graves people, the gift that keeps on giving. Both ladies gave everything they had, their chemistry was on point, and then it happened, the finish was lazy. Lyra tried to slam Nia, but. Jax hit her with her eNialator finisher. I hated this. The fans booed the finish, and I don't blame them. This brings up multiple problems, the first one. Her against Bayley which is now set for Summerslam, looks plain on paper, and the second one, Smackdown doesn't have a very deep womens roster, so the creative needs to have a plan, which could open a door of issues. Nia cut a promo afterwards, and she was heavily booed.
Mens King Of The Ring final Randy Orton vs Gunther
This. Was, my match of the night. The fans were firmly on Randy's side, which meant Gunther had to work hard to get them on side, and there lys the beauty of this match, the physicality at points were eye wincing, to the point that Randy's chest was made to look like roast ham. Randy, gave. Gunther three slams on the announcers, but this came to nothing, as. Gunther got the win after. Randy hit him with an RKO, allowing Gunther to roll him up. This. Was. Brilliant. His promo afterwards hit like a heelish assault to my senses. Yes I did see the botch, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the match.
HHH announcement
HHH then made an announcement. Drew Mcintyre has been medically cleared, and he will face Damien Priest, at. Clash At The Castle, for the. WWE Heavyweight Championship, when the WWE heads to Glasgow next month. I like this. I think this will be Drews crowning. And he thouroghly deserves his moment in the sun, or rain, lets be honest he's Scottish.
Cody Rhodes vs Logan Paul WWE Undisputed Championship
This. Was. A slow burner of a match, that when it going, turned into an excellent main event. It was a perfectly balanced blend of, cat'n mouse action, filled with heart, and passion, from. Cody smacking Logan with a bottle of Prime, to him eating a knuck sandwich to the stomach. Logans deceitful behavior pissed off the normally, cool and calm Michael Cole. Cody paid respect to his late dad, in a flurry mixture of Boxing, and. Wrestling, he gave Logan a Cody cutter on the announcers table. Logan did a viral coast to coast, putting Cody through the Saudi announcers table. Cody then kicked out of a frogsplash attempt. This brought the worst out in Logan, who tried to go to the brass knuck well again, but he was stopped by the special guest ring announcer. Ibrahim Al Hajjaj. Logan was heard asking him, who do you think you are, but it was cody who replied, by saying. Cody Rhodes. Bitch. He hit Logan with three Cross Rhodes, and that was all she wrote. Cody retained his WWE Undisputed Championship. This. Was. A great way to end the WWE aspect of the weekend, oh well it's now over to Las Vegas.
Aew Collision
Jon Moxley segment
I liked this. Jon walked out with his nromal swagger, but before he could even talk, out came. Damn It Don Callis. Don talked about their history, which is laced in blood, and asked him to not go ahead with the match, his promo was decent, and it was the perfect fodder for Mox to attack him, only for Takeshista to turn the table on Mox, by attacking him, and going for his arm, by trapping it in a steelchair, and jumping on it. This. Was. A great segment, and it bled perfectly into the first match, when. Claudio Castagnoli came out to make the save.
Will Osperay Promo
I don't have a lot to say about this other, this was bloodsoaked brilliance.
Claudio Castagnoli. Daniel Garcia, and a mystery vs The Rightgeous and Lance Archer
This. Was. A real treat. Claudio Castagnoli, and. Daniel Garcia's mystery partner turned out to be, none other than. NJPW's Hiroshi Tanahashi. The match was a lot of fun. Tanahashi in Aew is always a pleasure to see on North American shores, he got the win for his team, as things start to look up for team Aew.
The Elite Segment
I loved this segment, because everyone. The Elite are not heel p*****, their genuinely nice guys, and. Team Aew, are very ungrateful. Nice shoes though lads. Man those fans looked pleased as punch to meet. The Bucks.
Lucha Bros vs The Gunns
I had fun watching this, from the mini Lucha's coming out with their dads, to the good eb and flow, that helped the match, embrace its physicality. The Lucha Bros got the win. Their Trios match will be decent against. The Bang Bang Gang for the belts should bang.
The Learning Tree Segment
The only thing that I took away from this was. Big Bill has faced terrible adversity, over the years, whilst Jericho has the boring in ring style of a slug, oh no, oh no. BRIAN KEITH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. STAY AWAY FROM THE JERICHO MID CARD VORTEX. Patrick it's to late. I know brain. I know.
Kyle O'reilly vs KM
Kyle O'reilly, beat. Kommander m*********** in a flat tv squash match.
Willow Nightingale Segment
I liked this segment. Willow talked with passion, fire, and grace. From her personal story, to, her wanting to make Mercedes Mone, wish that she stayed at home, by proving that she's the better woman. I loved this.
Lexi Nair interviews Trent Barretta
Lexi Nair, interviewed. Trent Barretta. All he wants to get out of the match on Sunday is this, he wants the world to see. Orange Cassidy the same way he does. Rocky Romero showed up, and offered Trent an olive branch, but. Trent was not Interested.
4 Way Tag Match
Buddy Matthews and Brody King, beat. The Acclaimed. Infantry, and. The Gates Of Agony. In a fairly flat 4 way match. But it's the aftermath that was excellent. Adam Copeland showed up the big screen. He took on the role of old man storyteller, which delved into some excellent promise, that was executed perfectly.
Timeless Toni Storm segment and more
Toni Storm cut a promo on Serena Deeb, that left a well delivered, nasty taste in my mouth. Her Prodige. Mariah May, then beat. Leyla Hirsch in a boring match. Lexi Nair interviewed Serena Deeb, in which she counteracted what Toni said Perfectly. please put the strap on Deeb this Sunday.
Bryan Danielson and Ftr vs Team TNA
I had a great time watching this on a sunny and rainy sunday morning. Satnam Singh Manhandling Dax Harwood was a sight to be seen. Sunjay Dutt holding all of that green, had me thinking. what do Team TNA, have in common with one of my favourite Bands ever ACDC? They like to let the money talk. Team Aew tried to chop down the big tree, that is Satnam Singh. Danielson hit Jarrett with a bopsycho knee, after. Ftr hit him with a shatter machine for the win. But afterwards, was when Ftr's passion came out. Cash wheeler spoke to the fans about when they first arrived in Aew, he spoke about his love for this company, and how he will die on the Aew hill. Whilst Dax said that he takes pride, in being others escapism, because he can play the role of the hero. I think we can all agree, that the wrestling world is better off with Aew in it.
Aew Double Or Nothing 2024
Will Osperay vs Roderick Strong Aew International Championship
This. Was. A quickpaced match from the outset, the physicality was great, and both men brought out success in each other, with fantastic back and forth. The Kingdom tried to get involved, so Osperay hit them with an aerial assault. Wardlow tried to get involved, but he was stopped. Roderick gave Will, a mini chopfest. The exchanges were fluent. Damn It Don Callis stepped in, and told Will to put him away with the tigerdriver, because he's already on his all way to the hospital, but. Wills common sense came to light, and he backed out. And got the win with his storm breaker finisher. I liked all of this.
Adam Cole segment
Then came the segment of the night, because it's the only one. Adam Cole returned to Aew, even though he's not fully medically cleared. It's just great to see him. He cut a promo on how Nevada sucks, he spoke about how he's been through hell, over the past couple of years, and, to quote one of my favourite bands Slipknot. We have a devil inside us. The lights went out in arena. A film played out, showcasing a hallway, that led into a room, filled with merch, and a ripped friends photo. Then it happened. Mjf returned looking like a chisled 2002 HHH, this was awesome. His Return was excellent, he's back, and my god it's great. He's now pushed on by hate, which means no more friendships, no more brochatcho's, and no more kangaroo kicks, he name checked he who shall not be named, whilst announcing that he's resigned with Aew, and he doesn't plan on f****** leaving anytime soon. Daddy's back, and he's even more pissed off than ever. I loved all of this.
The Bang Bang Gang vs Death Triangle Aew Trios Championship
I liked this. The Match felt a bit two quick for my liking, both teams got their move sets. In what was a packed match. Penta, and Fenix, both going airbourne. Both teams had great, physical exchanges, but it was to late, when the returning Juice Robinson, caused a distraction, so the Gang could have some golden bat fun. Jay white hit Pac with his bladerunner finisher for the win.
Timeless Toni Storm vs Serena Deeb Aew Womens Championship
This. Is. The best Timeless Toni Storm has looked, since the reinvention of her Character. Her match last night with Serena Deeb, was excellent, her pairing with Deeb was a clever piece of booking, and both ladies showed good chemistry, which allowed the match to have time to breathe, and give focus to the story of the match. Which was cheating not being allowed to prevail. Storm got the win, after hitting Deeb with a panama sunset, and a piledriver. I liked all of this. I'm gutted that one of my faves Serena didn't get the win.
Orange Cassidy vs Trent Berretta
I enjoyed all of this. Cassidy playing mindgames with Trent, by doing a fake walk out, coming out to his old Pixies, were is my mind entrance was a nice touch, and the match, was better than what I thought it had any right to be. Trent didn't break a sweat in the early going, as he tormented Orange, but. Cassidy fired back with a never say die attitude, but it was short lived, when he took a piledriver on the ring apron. Both men counteracted each others moveset perfectly. Cassidy got the win by roll up. Trent just walked off, like a big cry baby in the aftermath. Not even Rocky Romero could get through to him. Take a hint Rocky mate, he's lost to the darkside now, he wants to eat. Darth Vaders cookies.
Hook vs Chris Jericho vs Shibata Ftw Championship
Normally I would be, at this point screaming for Chris Jericho to go away, but this was actually watchable. From dice spots. shibata. Hook, and. Jericho all taking bumps on them, ouch lego comes to my mind. Jericho got battered with a kendo stick. Shibata performed a deathrider on Hook, that landed on Jericho, who was positioned on a table, that refused to break. Chris was then drop kicked through a table by Shibata. Big Bill broke up a submission hold, and then ate some table himself, thanks to Hook, a hooded figure came out to help Jericho, he had some trash can fun with shibata. Chris gave Hook a judas effect, but pinned Shibata for the win.
Jon Moxley vs Konosuke Takeshista IWGP Championship No1 Contenders match
This. Was. A lofi burner, that gravitated into a match of the night contender, complete with. Fists. Headbutts. Eye Gauges. Submission holds, and a healthy dosage of. German Suplexes. Moxley got the win with a chair stomp, that led into a deathrider. I can understand why. NJPW, would be hesitant to not allow a western world promotion, have one of their titles be defended on American soil. But on a whole, this was great, it's just a shame that it wasn't for the main belt, thanks to interpromotional politics. Damn Don Callis has a lot to answer doesn't he.
Barbwire Steel Cage Match Adam Copeland vs Malakai Black
What came next, was a bloodsoaked physical war with shades of the attitude era. From Copeland walking out to South Of Heaven, by one of my favourite bands. Slayer, to the new Brood logo appearing on the tron. Malakai was the first to taste his own crimson, when. Copeland scraped Barbwire into his face. Copeland had the threat of getting his eye gauged out to give him nightmares. Malakai Black took on the role of Negan from the Walking Dead. wielding a barbwire baseball bat. like a menace, he then powerbombed Copeland through a table. Adam then did the unthinkadle, he jumped off the top of the cage, putting. Black through a table, with an elbow drop, and landing awkwardly in the process. Black was wrapped in barbwire at that moment. The fight was taken to the outside, when. Malakai kicked Adam out of the cage. The rest of The House Of Black came out, and played possum. teasing being on the side Copelands, but choosing their overarching leader, and attacking Copeland, they brought him back into the cage, and were about to sacrifice him, that was until the lights started to flicker Black and Red, only for in 2024. Gangrel to come up from the under the ring canvas, and help his old friend to get the win with a sphere, and take a kick to the face from Black for his troubles. For my money this in my top 3 matches of the weekend. I loved this.
Willow Nightingale vs Mercedes Mone TBS Championship
This Kicked off a triple header of main events, to varying results. I thought this was worth the wait. The Build felt like a bit of a mix bag. But that gave way for both ladies to go beyond their realms of comfort, and deliver something that was a crowd pleaser. Mercedes had an entrance, that delved into the positive side of feminism, to her being played out to the ring by, a drum band cosplaying as Levar Burton, from. Star Trek Next Generation. The physicality was laid bare by both ladies. Mercedes got the win, and. Willow was left crushed, but what was worse. She was betrayed by her friends. Stokeley Hathaway, and. Kris Statlander. I used to have a lot of time for Stokeley Hathaway. He's now off of my Christmas card list. If I had one that is. And as for that Alien Statlander. Let's wait and see.
Swerve Strickland vs Christian Cage Aew World Heavyweight Championship
Even though I enjoyed the match. I do feel that it didn't live to the blood feud moniker, that it set for itself. The action flowed nicely, but as a whole it failed to lift off. Swerve retained, after a set of solid run through of sequences.
Anarchy In The Arena
Then what came next, could only be described as the s*** hitting the fan. In the best way positive. I mean, where do I beging, because this was f****** insanity peppers times by a hundred. Team Aew vs The Elite. This was, fiery, bloodsoaked, chaos from the start. It was 30 minutes of manic fun. From the battle of the theme music, which paved the way for a truth to be revealed. It costs a lot of money to get the rights to play Europe's final countdown. This acted like Singin In The Rain in A Clockwork Orange, as it worked to soundtrack the early stages of the violence. This was an arena wide fight, shot on a four way camera shot, used to keep viewers in the loop. Jack Perry tried to commit murder, after running into Darby Allin with a bus. He took a dunking into an ice bath before this Dax, and. Danielson, both got busted open. Darby Allin proved that he's unkillable as he walked back into the arena. The Bucks put him down their elevator. Their was plenty of poker chip call backs. All of this led to a TK driver to Danielson. The Elite took out Ftr, with table spots. Jack Perry showed up again, and took his anger out on Tony Khan. He dragged Tony out to the stage, were he was met by a firestarter, twisted firestarter. Darby Allin, complete with a flame thrower. He set Jack on fire, and let him cook, like prime BBQ. Darby then kicked Okada in the yam bags, and gave him a coffin drop, but this was stopped by The Bucks. Darby was tied up. Matt hit Dax with an exploding steelchair. Okada then had his own rainmaker party, with a thumbtack glove, and thumbtack trainers. The Elite would hang Darby upside down, and he was subjected to multiple superkicks. Danielson wanted a tack shoe, so he had fun with one. The near falls were well created, and they made sense to the violence. Danielson then took an EVP trigger, and this would be the downfall of the match. Jack Perry put Danielson away a knee to the face. All of this was crazy.
Overview Of The Weekend
With the tv of both company's remaining steady, the focus was put on the PPV. PLE's. Both delivered, and with Aew, now five years old, the company has built a fanbase on the grounds of differances of the industry, whilst WWE's creative started to stall, and crumble. Even though HHH, has brought them back to prominence. I feel both Company's are making the industry better, at a time when the fanbase are more split than ever.
Both tv shows are a solid 7/10
WWE King And Queen Of The Ring is a good 8/10.
And Aew Double Or Nothing is a high 9/10.
